Publisher end of support: what to do with your files
Microsoft ended support for Publisher on October 13, 2026. Here is what that means and how to keep your files usable.
What changed
Publisher no longer receives updates and is no longer part of Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Installed perpetual copies keep running for now, but new computers will not have it, and no other Microsoft app opens .pub files.
Your options
- Convert while you still can. If someone still has Publisher, opening each file and saving it as PDF keeps a picture of it, but not editable text.
- Convert in bulk to editable files. Pub Rescue converts .pub files to PowerPoint, Word and PDF without Publisher, and shows each page with a score before you pay.
- Rebuild templates once. For bulletins you produce every week, convert one recent issue to the Editable PowerPoint and use it as your new template in PowerPoint, Google Slides or Canva.
Which format to choose
- PowerPoint (Exact-look) when the page must look the same.
- PowerPoint (Editable) when you will rewrite the text.
- Word when the document is mostly text.
- PDF/A for printing and archives.
