Bank statement PDF to QuickBooks import file
Your statement never leaves your computer: the PDF is read by code running in this page, and nothing is uploaded.
QuickBooks Online accepts two layouts for bank transactions uploaded from a CSV file. The converter writes either one:
Date, Description, Amount: one signed amount, money out negative and money in positive.Date, Description, Credit, Debit: in Intuit's own example a payment goes under Credit and a deposit under Debit, which is the opposite of how most bank statements label their columns. If the upload screen shows the amounts reversed, choose its option to reverse them.
What the file follows
- Dates in one format. Intuit recommends dd/mm/yyyy and the upload screen asks which format the file uses.
- No zeros: empty amounts stay blank, and rows that net to zero are left out.
- Plain amounts, no currency symbols or thousands separators.
- Punctuation Intuit asks you to remove is taken out of descriptions (for example
AMAZON.CAbecomesAMAZON CA). - At most 1,000 transactions per file. Longer exports are split into numbered files, each with its header row.
Rows without a year (statements that print only month and day) block the export until you enter the statement year, because QuickBooks rejects them.
