Why AI Assistants Don't Mention Your Business (And How to Find Out What They Say)
A growing share of buying research now starts inside an AI assistant. People ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity things like "who's the best [your category] near me?" or "what tools should I use for X?" — and the assistant answers with a short list of named options. If your business isn't on that list, you never even enter the consideration set. There's no impression, no click, no chance to compete.
This is a different problem from classic SEO. You can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible to an AI assistant, because the assistant isn't reading your meta tags — it's synthesizing an answer from the text it can find, trust, and attribute to you.
The shift: from ranking to being cited
Search engine optimization (SEO) is about ranking a page. Answer-engine / generative-engine optimization (AEO/GEO) is about being named and cited inside a generated answer. The unit of success changes from "position 3 on a results page" to "one of the three brands the model mentions when asked." Those are not the same thing and they don't always move together.
Five reasons an assistant leaves you out
- You're not described in plain, attributable language. Models reward content that states clearly what you do, for whom, and where. Clever taglines and vague hero copy give the model nothing concrete to repeat.
- No third-party corroboration. Assistants lean on sources they can cross-check: directories, reputable mentions, reviews, comparison pages. A site that only talks about itself, with nothing pointing back, is hard to trust enough to recommend.
- Thin or missing structured data. Schema (Organization, Product, FAQ, LocalBusiness) helps machines parse who you are and what you offer. Its absence makes you ambiguous.
- Category and entity confusion. If the model can't cleanly place you in a category ("a Toronto bookkeeping firm for e-commerce sellers"), it defaults to better-defined competitors.
- Stale or contradictory facts across the web. Conflicting addresses, names, or offerings across pages lower confidence, and low confidence means you get dropped from a short list where the model is being careful.
What "good" looks like to an answer engine
- A crisp, repeatable one-line description of the business and its specific niche.
- Pages that answer real questions buyers ask, in direct question-and-answer form.
- Consistent name, category, and core facts everywhere the brand appears.
- Structured data that labels the entity and its offerings.
- At least some independent corroboration the model can lean on.
None of this is a trick. It's making your actual value legible to a system that summarizes rather than ranks. The brands that get recommended are usually the ones easiest to describe accurately in one sentence.
How to see what AI actually says about you
You can't fix what you can't measure. The practical first step is to ask the major assistants the questions your buyers would ask, and record — verbatim — whether you're named, what's said, who's named instead, and where the model's information is coming from. Do it across several assistants, because they pull from different sources and disagree.
That audit is exactly the service A3E runs. Our AI Visibility Audit queries the major assistants with buyer-intent prompts for your category, captures what each one says about you and your competitors, identifies the specific reasons you're being left out, and returns a prioritized fix list. It's AI-driven analysis end to end — that's the point of the product, not a thing we hide. We report what we find, including where you're already doing well.

Is this just SEO?
No. SEO targets search-result rankings. This targets whether AI assistants name and cite you in generated answers — a related but separate surface with its own signals.
Which assistants do you check?
The major general-purpose assistants buyers actually use for recommendations (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity). Coverage is stated in the report.
Do you guarantee I'll start showing up?
No. We diagnose why you're absent and give you a prioritized, concrete fix list. Visibility depends on executing those fixes and on factors outside any vendor's control. We don't sell guarantees.
How fast can I see where I stand?
The free /audit snapshot is instant. The full audit is delivered as a report you can download once it's generated.
