Best Man Speech for Your Best Friend

Everyone tells you a best man speech should be funny. Nobody tells you how many jokes, aimed at whom, or when to stop. Here is the calibration, plus a full example.

The advice given to best men is uselessly vague: be funny, but not too funny; roast him, but keep it clean. Here is a more usable version. Three jokes is the working number for a four-minute speech — one in the opening thirty seconds to prove you can, one in the middle of your main story, and one just before the turn to sincerity, which functions as the door closing behind you. Fewer than three and the room wonders why the best man is being so solemn. More than five and you are doing a set, and a wedding reception is one of the worst rooms in the world for stand-up: no stage, no lighting, terrible acoustics, and a third of the audience is over seventy and has been drinking since noon.

Aim matters more than volume. There are four possible targets and only three are safe. Yourself is always safe and always funniest — the schemes you got caught in together, the fact that you are the one holding the microphone despite the evidence. The groom is safe if the joke is about a harmless persistent trait: his timekeeping, his cooking, his refusal to admit he is lost. Your shared history is safe. The bride is not a target, ever, and neither is anyone’s family, ex, job loss, or anything that happened after midnight on a trip abroad. That is not primness — it is that the room contains her grandmother, and you cannot recover a room that has gone quiet in the wrong way.

Then there is the turn, which is what separates a best man speech from a roast. Somewhere around the two-thirds mark you stop joking and you do not come back. The transition should be flat and unannounced — no ‘but seriously, folks’. Just drop the register and start telling the truth about your friend. The jokes were the down payment; the turn is what you bought with them, and it is the reason the bride’s family will come and find you at the bar afterwards.

The four-minute shape

A best friend has a specific advantage over a brother here, and it is worth using deliberately. A brother has the childhood material but is also inside the family, which limits what he can say about the family. A best friend was there for the years the parents mostly heard about afterwards — the first flat, the bad job, the stretch where he was not doing well and nobody at the table knew. You can say, carefully and without detail, that you saw him through a hard period and that the man standing here is not the same one. Handled with restraint, that is the single most powerful thing available in the whole speech, and no other speaker can offer it.

Handled without restraint it is a disaster, so the rule is one sentence, no specifics, no diagnosis, and check with him first. Any reference to a difficult period gets cleared with the groom a fortnight before the wedding. Not on the day, not in the room. If he hesitates at all, cut it — there is always another story, and there is no version of this that is worth a groom sitting through a speech he dreads.

Example: best man speech for a best friend

Evening, everyone. I’m Owen. Callum asked me to be his best man, which I think tells you a great deal about the quality of his decision-making, and yet here we all are anyway.

I’ve known him seventeen years. We met at fifteen, and by sixteen we had jointly decided that the best possible use of a Saturday was to cycle to the coast — forty miles, no water, no map, and Callum navigating on the strength of a feeling he had. We got there at nine at night. His mum had rung the police. He still maintains it was a good route.

And that’s the thing about Callum, actually. He is completely, hopelessly certain, and he is wrong maybe forty percent of the time, and he has never once left anyone behind on the road. I have been on the wrong end of a lot of his plans and I have never been on the wrong end of him.

There was a stretch a few years ago that wasn’t easy for him. I’m not going to say anything more about it than that. But the man standing here today came out of it kinder than he went in, which is not what usually happens, and I have never been prouder of anyone.

And then he met Ines. Ines, I want to say this to you directly: the day he told me about you, he described you for about twenty minutes and not once did he mention what you look like or what you do. He talked about how you argue. He said you argue like someone who wants to get to the right answer rather than win. He’d never said anything like that about anyone.

Welcome to the mess, Ines. Everyone — please be upstanding. To Callum and Ines.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a best man speech be?

Four minutes, or about 550 to 650 spoken words. Five is the outer limit and only if it is genuinely working. Nobody has ever complained that a best man speech was too short.

How many jokes should a best man speech have?

About three in a four-minute speech: one in the opening, one inside the main story, one just before you turn to sincerity. More than five and it becomes a comedy set, which a reception room is badly suited to.

What should a best man never joke about?

The bride, exes, anyone's family, money, and anything from a trip abroad that happened after midnight. Safe targets are yourself, the groom's harmless habits, and shared history where you are equally implicated.

When should a best man stop joking and get sincere?

Around the two-thirds mark, and then do not go back. Make the transition without announcing it — no 'but seriously'. Just drop the register and tell the truth about your friend.

Can I mention a hard time my best friend went through?

Only with his explicit permission, obtained at least two weeks before the wedding, and in one sentence with no specifics. If he hesitates at all, cut it and use another story.
